Elève de Gleyre et de Gérôme, deuxième Grand Prix de Rome en 1861, il connût très tôt le succès au Salon, exposant une oeuvre variée de la peinture d'Histoire à la peinture de genre, de la peinture de paysages aux scènes naturalistes.
